NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Amazon will sell $10 gift cards to its site for half the price on Tuesday, through its daily deals site AmazonLocal.
George won’t reveal how many gift cards Amazon is offering on Tuesday, or any stats about how AmazonLocal has performed so far.
Mike George, vice president of AmazonLocal, says the promotion is the most high profile yet for the service, which launched last June in Boise, Idaho.
This potential opportunity is not lost on the market, as companies including LivingSocial, Travelzoo (TZOO), Amazon.com (AMZN), OpenTable (OPEN), and Google (GOOG) have launched daily deal services as well.
Hough others, including Facebook, have backed out of the daily deals category after it seemed to cool off last year, George says Amazon is applying its experience in the online retail space to the segment.
But daily deal sites have raised the stakes in convenience (they arrive via e mail and are bought with a click), savings (half off deals to upscale establishments are common) and experiences (Want to hang glide.
LivingSocial sold nearly 1.4 million of the $10 for-$20 gift cards — the equivalent of 80 per second — in the US.
LivingSocial sold more than 1 million of the vouchers and greatly increased its visibility.
