Hewlett-Packard apparently just internally announced a new division focused on mobile within the Personal Systems Group.
However, a leaked memo uncovered by webOS Nation reveals Hewlett-Packard is planning to launch Gram, an independent company under Hewlett-Packard’s financial umbrella that will employ the webOS team that makes up the webOS Global Business Unit.
The memo says in part, With this move, we are building on our commitment to re invest in mobility via dedicated leadership, focused research and development, amazing new products and a growing suite of applications and services.
Once upon a time, Hewlett-Packard simply purchased Palm to lead the company into the mobile arena.
After initially committing to double down on webOS, the company launched the Hewlett-Packard TouchPad, a quality tablet that never had a chance thanks to its high price and lack of developer support.
At the core of things big and small," and the description of the company as leveraging webOS, Hewlett-Packard’s cloud offerings and Enyo, a framework created to support application development for the TouchPad tablet and the webOS platform, to "unleash the freedom of the Web" with the help of Hewlett-Packard partners.
However, with the purchase of Palm, Hewlett-Packard acquired 1,500 of Palms patents its likely Hewlett-Packard is ready to build upon the foundation laid by Palm.
This new unit will initially focus on consumer tablets, but will eventually grow and expand into new categories and segments (smartphones?), says the memo.
Shipments in the Computer sector, which in Canalys’ book includes tablets, were higher than ever, totaling 108,708,780 units globally.
However, Hewlett-Packard turned to Alberto Torres, ex executive vice president of Nokia, to lead this new unit.
Torres is also currently the vice chairman of Bang & Olufsen, a high end audio company that prides itself on forward thinking designs.
The memo notes that tablet, along with the existing notebook teams, will in the Computer unit and under the leadership of James Mouton.
