Comcast Chief Executive Officer Brian Roberts applies the Apple model to his business empire: Keep it simple, and reinvent constantly.

This company is in a position to take an event or a news happening or a movie and expose it as widely as possible in a very fragmented world, different from almost any other media or telecommunications company out there.

“FORTUNE — America’s biggest media company isn’t what you think. Comcast (CMCSA) takes in more revenue and commands a higher market value than Disney (DIS), News Corp. (NWSA), Time Warner (TWX), or any other competitor. Even Chief Executive Officer Brian Roberts marvels at how the company has risen. Founded by his father as a small cable TV system in Tupelo, Miss, Comcast is now majority owner of NBCUniversal, as well as the country’s largest cable operator (by far), the largest residential Internet service provider, and the third largest phone company. Roberts, 53, talked recently with Fortune’s Geoff Colvin about what he learned from last summer’s Olympic coverage, continually changing the business model, and much else. Edited excerpts:Q: The Peter Drucker question: What business are you in?A: We’re now clearly in the cross section, maybe uniquely, of media and technology. Comcast NBCUniversal has an incredible array of brands and ways to deliver those brands and experiences for consumers. We’re no longer a cable company or a broadcaster. We’re right at a cusp of change in media and technology.An example of media and technology was your coverage of the Olympics, which seemed to be a model of what you envisioned when you bought NBC. These events were streamed live online through every kind of device and also broadcast on traditional TV, sometimes live, sometimes taped. You called it a laboratory. What did you learn?A bunch of things. The first job was to try not to lose money on the Olympics. Based on the prior couple of Olympics, it looked as if we would lose money, and we were very fortunate to break even, maybe even make a small profit. That bodes well for the multibillion dollar [$4.4 billion] decision we made to carry the Olympics through 2020.We had projected we’d be about 10% below Beijing because Michael Phelps won eight gold medals, and how could you top that? And the [Beijing] time zone was so far away that a lot of events were broadcast live in the US Europe is the most difficult for that live factor. So we budgeted it down 10% and in fact came in up 10%. Why? Well, social media was something the NBC team embraced. We also used all our networks [NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, Telemundo, Bravo, USA, and many others], not just one. The number of hours of television was unprecedented. We put every single event live online and had mobile apps. The cable side of the company, Xfinity, had on demand information on every American athlete on laptops, on mobile phones. We had 40 million to 50 million on demand sessions in 17 days.So the public could not get enough ways to experience and touch the Olympics, and that bodes well for the future model. This company is in a position to take an event or a news happening or a movie and expose it as widely as possible in a very fragmented world, different from almost any other media or telecommunications company out there.Telephony is another thing you’re doing in a big way. Voice is becoming essentially a wireless business, but you’ve sold your wireless spectrum. What’s the future?While that is certainly the trend, we still are adding hundreds of thousands of wireline voice accounts because it’s more than wireline voice. It’s a great bargain. If the babysitter’s cellphone doesn’t work, you want to call your house and make sure somebody answers — how much is that worth to you? One day it was $100. Today maybe it’s $25. There’s a number at which a lot of people say, “You know what.

So Verizon Wireless has opened up all their products to our customers and to our technologists to innovate, so we can make for consumers a seamless world between our Xfinity home products and your tablets, your TV on the go, your downloading, your preferences, your history, all coming together, and then market it with Verizon Wireless in certain markets where we give great deals to consumers.

At Dell World in Austin, Texas, today, President Bill Clinton delivered a keynote address discussing the importance of collaboration and how society needs to get into the tomorrow business.

Silicon Valley, the startup community, big data vendors all of them are in the business of tomorrow.

Clinton cited recent studies that show fourth graders are now just behind South Korea and Singapore in math and science test scores.

Thats a good sign but compare 11th grade test scores and theres a gaping difference.

Clinton said the US non defense discretionary budget continues to get cut.

Com Inc is in advanced talks to buy the supplier of chips for its Kindle tablet computer, Israeli financial newspaper Calcalist reported on Monday, in what could mark a step in the company’s ambitions in the smartphone sector.

TI spokeswoman Whitney Jodry said the company does not comment on market rumors and speculation.

Three weeks ago, TI said it would pull back its wireless business because the use TI chips called OMAP in smartphones and tablets are less attractive given the trend of a few larger players moving toward vertical integration.

As a result, investors were left wondering when TI’s revenuefrom smartphones and tablets would start to disappear and howsoon it would be able to replace it with new revenue generatedfrom applying its previous investments to new markets.

In English that means some of TIs largest mobile customers, such as Samsung, have begun sourcing their own chips.

TI combined its wireless business with its embedded processing unit in May.

While the opportunity in smartphone is less attractive, we are fully committed to  OMAP and connectivity products – and we see a great opportunity for both OMAP and connectivity in a broader set of embedded applications and we are accelerating our push into these new markets with product roadmaps optimized for automotive, industrial and other consumer applications, Jodry said today.

But when the company started buckling under $1 billion in debt during the crisis, the Siegels home went into foreclosure and was put up for sale.

So why is David Siegel – a man who defined excess and debt in the 2000s – now saying that debt and spending are ruining the country.

We asked David and during a phone interview last night, and he told us that this was about his workers, not himself.

"we have enough money for the rest of our life and enough to leave a good inheritance for our kids.

" He said the loan for Versailles is paid off and hes resuming construction on the home.

" The deal with Versailles lenders, he went on, worked out "better than we imagined," since he was allowed to go nine months without making any interest payments on the loan.

Jackie has several offers for a new reality TV show "which were in the process of ranking and evaluating," Siegel said.

While Westgate has never been more profitable, the company has 5,000 fewer workers than in 2007.

He said that if Obama is re elected and imposes Obamacare and higher taxes, he may just have to let more of his remaining 7,000 workers go.

" Siegel stressed that he wasnt out to intimidate his workers into voting for Romney.

"we want our employees to be educated on what could happen to their future if the wrong person is elected.

(Siegel admitted to us that he used a similar email circulating on the web as "the basis" of his own email).

Instead of raising our taxes and depositing that money into the Washington black hole, let us spend it on growing the company, hire more employees, and generate substantial economic growth.

Our employees will enjoy the wealth of that tax cut in the form of promotions and better salaries.

Thomas Jefferson, the author of our great Constitution, once said, "democracy" will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

The current trade volume between the two countries is N 1 trillion, meaning that the countries seek a 100% increase in trade.

In order to achieve this both countries plan on improving the business climate in Nigeria.

Addressing a press conference in Lagos on Monday, Nigeria’s Minister of Trade and Investment, Mr Olusegun Aganga; and Secretary, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, United Kingdom, Dr Vince Cable said the factors hampering expanded business between the two countries had been identified and would be tackled.

Some of the solutions raised were creating an enabling environment for Small and Medium enterprises (SMEs) to thrive, as well as leveraging on the potential of Nigerians in the diaspora.

Aganga said, “We have had a useful business to business roundtable, which is a follow up to the meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and David Cameron, where they both set a target to double trade in the two countries by the year 2014.

We have fertile land, good weather condition and 34 solid minerals in commercial quantities, all of which make Nigeria an investment destination of choice.

We intend to leverage on Nigerians in diaspora in United Kingdom, most of who are SMEs involve in trade,” he added.United Kingdom Secretary, Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, Dr Vince Cable, said, We do not worry if there is an in balance against the United Kingdom. If we do not import crude oil from Nigeria, we could import from other countries.The important thing is that trade is growing in both directions. That is the key because it is mutually beneficial. We want to see barriers being removed”.

The new look: The default view in Apples new Maps app is the same as before: A birds eye view from above with basic two dimensional visuals.

It looks a lot like what youre used to seeing from any variety of mobile or online mapping services, but it uses vector graphics, so it loads and moves much more smoothly than previous versions.

Maps options display: As with previous versions of Maps, tapping the bottom right hand corner of the map will peel back the screen and display new basic options.

Theres Drop Pin, for instance, which lets you place a pin on the map and move it freely, using it as a start or destination marker.

"Standard" is two dimensional with a hand drawn look while "Hybrid" displays scenery as satellite images with overlaid roads and other info.

In iOS 6, Apple has removed the iPhone’s original built in Maps app and replaced it with a brand new one that doesn’t use Google services.

On supported devices — the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 or better — you can activate a 3 D mode that renders buildings and other features that can be zoomed and rotated.

Traffic information: You can turn traffic information on and off, just as in past versions.

But now youll see icons indicating accidents and other traffic hazards.

Turn by turn directions can use the traffic data to display accurate travel times and automatically reroute you around problems.

If the problem persists to Halloween, then we’ll think of Maps as a failure.

And there have been rumblings that Google has already written their own Google Maps app for iOS and submitted it to the iTunes Store for Apple’s approval.

If you have an older device, you can still get directions but they wont update automatically as you drive or feature voice prompts.

And if Apple doesn’t turn Maps around and make it into a reliable, trustworthy resource by the end of the year, then we’ll consider it a fatality.

As you may be aware, Apple has stopped using Google Maps to power it, opting to go with its own solution.

It also doesnt have walking or public transit directions anymore, something that non drivers are up in arms about.

It’s a good idea to have Yelp installed and set up on your iOS device in order to read full reviews or view any additional information not shown in the Maps app.

Tapping on a business brings up its name, review rating on Yelp, and a shortcut icon to get driving directions.

Theres also an info icon that, when tapped, expands the business info to include the phone number, address, and other, more detailed information.

Maps is plugged into Yelp, so any restaurant or business that’s on Yelp will probably turn up in a search.

Selecting the Reviews tab from within the business info display brings up the most recent Yelp reviews of the business youre looking at.

You can also check in via Yelp or post a tip on Yelp using two other buttons available on the Reviews display.

You can tap on the Photos tab on a business popup to see Yelp photos taken there by customers.

Theyre pretty small thumbnails, actually, but you can touch them to load larger ones.

Theyll pop up in Safari or, if you have it installed on your device, within the Yelp app itself (get it for iPhone and iPad).

Tapping the Add Photo button also takes you to the Yelp app to upload your own photos of the business.

As far as Derek Peterson sees it, Wall Street can’t compete with the marijuana business.

After a decade in investment banking, in late 2009, Peterson learned that a friend’s marijuana dispensary was clearing $18 million a year, dwarfing Peterson’s $300,000 to $400,000 annual salary at Morgan Stanley.

“we were a finance guy, always analyzing different industries. we started looking at the products and services utilized in this industry, the economics behind it and how we could prosper from a peripheral business.”.

Widely known by its slogan “You’re In Good Hands With Allstate,” Allstate offers insurance products (auto, home, life and retirement) and services through Allstate agencies, independent agencies, and Allstate exclusive financial representatives, as well as via and 1 800 Allstate.

Peterson launched GrowOp Technology in May 2010 as a side business, selling “plug and play” mobile hydroponic trailers equipped with everything necessary to grow medical marijuana.

Morgan Stanley fired him seven months later for his pot side business — unfairly, Peterson claims.

“Morgan Stanley Smith Barney believes it treated Mr Peterson fairly and appropriately, including in its application of its well established policy requiring disclosure and approval of outside business activities,” a Morgan Stanley Smith Barney spokeswoman told The Huffington Post.

Rather than joining another Wall Street firm, Peterson decided to get serious about weed.

Through one of GrowOp’s investors Peterson had the opportunity in February 2012 to merge with Terra Tech Corp.

Besides selling hydroponic trailers for $30,000 to $80,000, his company makes hydroponic equipment, acquiring smaller retailers and creating new technology, including an iPhone app that allows growers to monitor crops remotely.

HuffPost Small Business recently asked Peterson what it’s like to go from Wall Street to weed.

We spent 10 years building up to where we were, and was walking away from periodic seven figure bonuses, benefits, expense accounts and perks to run our own company, living off our savings.

There was a lot of press at the time around the “green rush,” so they understood there was a market opportunity, but we could tell they thought we were crazy for leaving the comfort of Wall Street.

What Wall Street principles did you want to apply to the medical marijuana industry.

We saw a fragmented industry and knew it was a good opportunity for mergers and acquisitions, for the consolidation of mom and pop shops that didn’t have an exit strategy or ability to monetize.

You’ve got a thousand different retailers all buying at standard price, so by forming a buying group, you could compete for better pricing.

It’s a cultural industry in which people are congealed by loyalty and don’t want outsiders coming in and shaking things up too much.

We sell hydroponic equipment to cultivate products, whether that’s food or cannabis, so we haven’t felt any pushback.

There’s demand for the product, whether it’s a white market, black market or gray market.

We started utilizing cannabis, not only in smokable form, but in creams for our back.

So we’re a huge proponent from understanding firsthand its efficacy and lack of side effects.

We find it frustrating, as an entrepreneur, when the economy is in the state it’s in, watching businesses creating full time, well paying, fully benefited jobs shut down by the feds.

We’ve made an environmental controller where farmers can control the cycle of cultivation, turn lights on and off, monitor CO2 levels, temperature and dehumidifiers from an iPhone or iPad.

Increased technology can make indoor cannabis growing more environmentally friendly as well as add value to agriculture, given the droughts and our fragmented food distribution system.

You want to change the industry with innovative technology that could also have mainstream applications that change the way we live.

The tweaks, updates and beta projects are all part of Googles attempt to make searches faster and more relevant.

For starters, Google is bringing its Siri esque voice search feature to the iPad and iPhone.

In retaliation for the bitter Samsung rivalry, Apple will develop new applications that minimize Google’s presence on both the iPhone and iPad.

The company expects to roll out an update to its free Google Search app later this week with the new feature, which uses speech recognition technology to understand spoken, natural language search requests.

Depending on how you phrase your question or request, the app will bring up text answers and images or play YouTube videos.

For example, Play the sleepy kitten video should automatically bring up and start playing a video of said exhausted feline, and Whats the weather here next week.

The version of this search by voice feature was already available for Android 4.1 users, and Google says it will be available for older versions of Android at some point in the future.

Two months later, it began redirecting Chinese users of the Google.cn search engine service to a Hong Kong site.

There also are some subtle changes coming to English versions of the search engine around the world, starting Thursday.

Even though the Google Patents search tool has been around since 2006, the tech giant didn’t formalize a deal with the USPTO until June of 2010.

So it makes sense the company trying to "organize the worlds information" would come up with a better way to search for patents.

Patent attorneys tasked with proving this rely on “prior art,” which constitutes all information that has been made available to the public in any form before a given date that might be relevant to a patents claims of originality.
